After more than 35 years in business, what's the biggest lesson you've learned about staying relevant while retail continues to evolve?
The most important thing for me and the Mantons' team is staying true to our values, no matter what.
Alongside stocking quality products, we're passionate about supporting our local community, our suppliers and our team members. Those values have remained constant throughout the years and continue to guide every decision we make.
Many brands describe themselves as 'unique'. When you're sourcing new products, what genuinely makes one supplier stand out enough to earn a place in Mantons?

Once we're confident in the quality of a product, we look for suppliers who can offer healthy margins and, importantly, products that will be exclusive to us within our local area.
That combination makes a real difference.
How has the way you discover new brands changed over the years? Are trade shows still one of your most valuable sourcing channels?
Because of our reputation, many brands now approach us directly.
We also speak regularly with retailers in other parts of the country to share recommendations and discuss new suppliers and emerging trends.
We still attend trade shows, but usually only one or two each year. They remain valuable, although the cost of attending means we have to be selective.
You've built a reputation not just as a retailer, but as part of your local community. How important has community become to the success of independent retail?
While we welcome plenty of tourists, our primary focus has always been our local community.
Our reputation as the Isle of Man's go-to destination for greeting cards and gifts, combined with our values and ethics, has helped us build strong customer loyalty and consistent footfall over many years.

Trade shows can be overwhelming. After seeing hundreds of exhibitors, what makes one brand memorable enough that you actually follow up afterwards?
The brands we follow up with are the ones that genuinely want to work with Manton's and can offer everything we're looking for—quality products, good margins and local exclusivity.
Those are the partnerships that are worth pursuing.
If you could change one thing about how suppliers approach independent retailers, what would it be?
Do your research.
Some suppliers contact us even though they're already stocked by nearby retailers, meaning they can't offer us the exclusivity we're looking for.

Looking back over the last decade, what's one change in customer behaviour that you think suppliers should be paying much more attention to?
Suppliers that are genuinely trade-only and direct consumer enquiries to local independent stockists really stand out.
That approach supports retailers, strengthens partnerships and ultimately benefits everyone involved.
Key Takeaways
Stay true to your values, even as retail continues to evolve.
Quality, margin and local exclusivity remain key buying criteria.
Strong relationships with the local community build long-term loyalty.
Trade shows are still valuable, but retailers are becoming more selective.

Supporting independent retailers creates stronger partnerships for everyone.
After more than 35 years in business, Mantons Cards demonstrates that independent retail success is built on consistency rather than constant reinvention.
